The Philippine Navy is once again exploring opportunities to strengthen its surface fleet. 🚢🇯🇵 Following the positive evaluation of the Japanese Abukuma-class destroyer escort JS Jintsu, another major update has surfaced: Japan is preparing to retire some of its Asagiri-class destroyers in the coming years, and sources indicate that the Philippines has shown strong interest in taking in a number of these ships.

The Asagiri-class vessels are larger and more heavily armed compared to the Abukuma-class. Displacing around 3,500 tons, they carry a wide range of weaponry including Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles, torpedo tubes, and ASROC launchers for anti-submarine warfare. 💥 One of the biggest advantages of this class is its ability to operate a helicopter, such as the SH-60, giving it extended reach for maritime patrol and submarine hunting missions.

However, there are challenges. The Asagiri-class runs on pure gas turbine engines (Kawasaki-Rolls Royce SM1A) without any diesel power option. This makes them more demanding in terms of fuel consumption and maintenance. But analysts point out that if the Philippine Navy first operates the Abukuma-class by 2027, it will gain valuable experience in sustaining Japanese-built warships, benefiting from logistics support and technical training that would make the transition to larger ships like the Asagiri-class much smoother. ⚓

Acquiring these ships would not only boost the Philippines’ naval firepower but also symbolize the deepening defense partnership between Manila and Tokyo. With tensions continuing in the West Philippine Sea and wider Indo-Pacific, having more capable ships will enhance the Navy’s presence and deterrence capability. 🌊

Looking ahead, if this materializes, the Philippine Navy could field a fleet in the 2030s composed of Jose Rizal-class frigates, Horizon 3 corvettes, Abukuma-class escorts, and Asagiri-class destroyers.
