With retired employees recently protesting delays in the payment of retirement benefits, the Telangana government is set to verify the PAN and Aadhaar details of all service and family pensioners.
According to a report in The Hindu, these details would be gathered and updated in the Integrated Financial Management and Information System (IFMIS) pension module by December 31.
The government has instructed officials to collect copies of PAN and Aadhaar cards of the pensioners for verification. This would ensure identification of pensioners, their cross-verification, and also better running of pension-related services, it said.
A memo from the Treasury and Accounts department said, “It is also intended to prevent irregular withdrawal of pension and, thereby, to safeguard the government exchequer against potential financial loss.”
As many as 9,719 employees are set to retire by the end of this year, while another 9,443 would do so in 2027. As far as verification goes, wherever Aadhaar and PAN details are not available on record, the concerned pensioner or family pensioners have to make them available.
Giving the whole exercise top priority, officers have been asked to rectify mistakes in the details by December 31 this year. #thesiasattv

A virus previously known to infect animals has now been detected in a human for the first time.
France has reported the world’s first documented human infection with the Shamonda virus. According to French health authorities, the patient, who was already seriously ill and severely immunocompromised, died earlier this month.
Shamonda virus is primarily associated with livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats and horses, and is believed to be transmitted among animals through bites from Culicoides biting midges. How the human infection occurred remains under investigation.
French authorities, with international health agencies monitoring the situation, are working to identify the source of infection, understand possible transmission routes and assess any potential public-health risk.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday said only followers of ‘Sanatan Dharma’ would be allowed to touch Durga idols during immersion in the Hooghly River, asserting that religious traditions must be followed.
Adhikari made the statement while reviewing immersion arrangements at Babughat in Kolkata, accompanied by Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand and Kolkata Municipal Commissioner Smita Pandey.
The chief minister said arrangements had been strengthened this year, keeping in mind both the security concerns and the religious significance of the immersion rituals.
“I have instructed the CP to keep the identification of those who will be involved in carrying the idols into the Hooghly. Those who follow ‘Sanatan Dharma’ will touch the idols. There is no communal matter in it,” he said.
“To maintain the purity of the immersion, we have to follow the traditions, the scriptures and the rules that have been followed for several thousand years. This is a festival, but primarily it is a religious programme,” he said.

Nearly 700 families have been displaced after their houses, located near Delhi’s historic Race Course Masjid, were reportedly demolished.
Delhi Police denied that any demolition took place, saying neither the mosque nor the neighbouring temple has been affected. “Nahi hua demolition. Na toh masjid na mandir ka hua hai (No demolition took place, neither of the mosque nor of the temple),” an officer from Tuglaq Road police station said.
Speaking to "Siasat" the officer, who refused to share his name and designation, said on Wednesday, October 21, that occupants of the “undemolished” houses were directed to leave and were allotted houses a few kilometres from the original place.
“Waise bhi woh log ko makaan de diya tha. Kuch 15-16 kilometres ke doori par, Mundka mein (In any case, they had been given a house—about 15–16 kilometres away, in Mundka).”
Videos from the scene show rubble and bricks scattered in front of the mosque.
The over 100-year-old mosque located near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence at Delhi Race Course Road was served an eviction order, its imam Mohammed Harun said. He was reportedly informed to vacate the space within six days, as local authorities disconnected the mosque’s electricity and water supply.
The mosque is registered under the Delhi Waqf Board and has a capacity of 800 worshippers. The imam said he had urged the board to approach the courts but has received no response. The issue has reached political circles, with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi seeking Union Minister Kiren Rijiju‘s intervention.
It is the property of the Land and Development Office (L&DO), Government of India, the warning read. “Any kind of unauthorised occupation, encroachment, construction or other illegal activity on this land is a legal offence.”
The notice warns that punitive and legal action will be taken against any person committing such acts. It named the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) as the executing agency.

The accused in the firing case involving actor Tiger Shroff had reportedly conducted reconnaissance of the residences of several Bollywood celebrities, including Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan, before the attack, according to sources in the Mumbai Crime Branch.
The shooters were reportedly instructed to target celebrities whose security arrangements were relatively less stringent. During the reconnaissance, different auto-rickshaw drivers had also taken the accused to the residences of several celebrities, including Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan.
It is learnt that the accused would ask auto-rickshaw drivers, whose services they used to get around Mumbai, to show them the homes of Bollywood stars. The accused allegedly told the drivers that they wanted to take pictures of the celebrities’ residences. Subsequently, different auto-rickshaw drivers took them to the homes of several actors.
During this period, an auto-rickshaw driver reportedly informed the accused that actor Tiger Shroff, son of Bollywood star Jackie Shroff, visited a football ground in Juhu every Sunday to play football.
Following this information, the accused reached the football ground on October 11, but Tiger Shroff did not visit the venue that day.
The accused then returned to the same ground the following Sunday, October 18. This time, they were carrying firearms. It was during this visit that firing was carried out at Tiger’s vehicle.
According to the police, some other individuals had also travelled to Mumbai from Haryana during the same period. They allegedly conducted reconnaissance before returning to Haryana.
After the attack on Tiger, the accused discarded both firearms at an unidentified location while leaving Mumbai.
According to police sources, the attackers had used one foreign-made pistol and one country-made pistol in the attack. The accused reportedly did not have much information about the type of foreign-made pistol they had used.

More than 20 United Nations human rights experts have expressed alarm over what they described as a “repeatedly heavy-handed police response” to peaceful youth-led demonstrations in New Delhi, and called on the authorities to ensure justice for reported human rights violations during the protests.
The experts made the remarks in Geneva on Tuesday, October 20.
The UN Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner had earlier voiced concern over “reports of mass detentions of demonstrators, protest leaders, members of civil society organisations, lawyers and journalists” before and during large-scale demonstrations in the national capital. India described those remarks as “unwarranted” and an “unacceptable interference” in its internal affairs.

Five persons were arrested for allegedly smuggling foreign-origin gold from Bangladesh to Hyderabad via Kolkata and transporting the proceeds of its sale in foreign currency, following a coordinated operation by officers of the Hyderabad Zonal Unit (HZU) and Vijayawada Regional Unit (RU).
The operation on October 18 led to the seizure of 3,147.1 grams of gold, USD 60,000 and 21,500 euros, collectively valued at Rs. 5.84 crore.
Acting on specific intelligence about a gang involved in smuggling foreign-origin gold, the officers intercepted a Scorpio vehicle on the outskirts of Vijayawada. A search revealed foreign currency concealed in a secret cavity in the vehicle.
During interrogation, the two occupants allegedly confessed to having delivered the gold on the outskirts of Vijayawada and said the foreign currency represented part of the sale proceeds of the smuggled gold.
Acting swiftly, the officers identified three other members of the gang travelling towards Hyderabad in a public bus. They intercepted the bus at a toll plaza and recovered three foreign-origin gold bars weighing approximately 3.1 kg from the trio. The bars had been concealed in a pouch tied around their waists.
All five persons allegedly involved in procuring and transporting the contraband were arrested and produced before the jurisdictional magistrate, who remanded them to judicial custody.
Further investigation is under way to establish the network’s operations and identify other persons involved in the smuggling racket.
