The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹53,428 crore outlay over five years to continue the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), which will now be implemented as the Pradhan Mantri Samajik Sahayata Yojana.

This major social security package significantly eases disability pension norms by reducing the eligibility benchmark from an 80% disability to 40%. In a key shift, the minimum age criterion has also been removed, allowing the disability pension to be availed right from birth. Under the revised structure, beneficiaries up to age 79 will receive ₹375 per month, while those aged 80 and above will receive ₹625 per month.

The initiative aims to support 3.20 crore beneficiaries across all 36 States and Union Territories between 2026-27 and 2030-31. While old-age and widow pensions, along with the family benefit scheme, will continue in their existing form, they will also be rebranded under the new umbrella scheme. Revised guidelines for the disability pension rollout are expected within three months.

The Singapore-flagged container vessel GFS Pride has sunk in international waters near the Strait of Hormuz after an attack on October 13 triggered a fire onboard. While Iran claims the ship, which was carrying over 2,500 shipping containers, struck a naval mine, shipping officials and maritime authorities report the damage was caused by an unknown projectile strike. All 21 crew members were safely evacuated by regional naval units and coast guards, with no injuries reported.

A second Singapore-registered container ship, GFS Giselle, was struck the following day, sustaining hull damage before reaching a safe anchorage under its own power with its 22 crew members unharmed. The sinking of the GFS Pride marks the second confirmed commercial vessel lost since the US-Iran war began on February 28.
