Headline: 🔔 PARENTS: Is your child’s discomfort more than just a "tummy ache"?
As a pediatric and neonatal surgeon, I often see parents who are surprised to learn that their child’s persistent crying or digestive issues were actually "silent" signs of an Inguinal Hernia.
While a visible bulge in the groin area is the most common sign, it isn't always there. Sometimes, the symptoms are much more subtle.
6 "Silent" Signs to Watch For:
Fever: Unexplained low-grade fever can sometimes indicate inflammation.
Feeling Full: Your child may refuse to eat or feel full very quickly.
Heartburn/Reflux: Increased pressure can cause digestive discomfort.
Constipation: Difficulty passing stool or unusual straining.
Pain in the Pelvic Area: Older children may describe a "heavy" or "aching" feeling.
Nausea/Vomiting: If the hernia is causing a blockage, nausea is a major red flag.
What is a Pediatric Inguinal Hernia?
In children, this is usually a congenital condition (present from birth) where a small sac remains open in the abdominal wall, allowing tissue or intestine to push through. It is especially common in premature babies and boys.
When should you worry?
If you notice a bulge that becomes hard, red, or very painful, or if your child cannot be comforted, seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and a simple surgical procedure can prevent serious complications.
