Understanding Narcissism, by Elizabeth Shaw.

A Narcissist Will Call You Crazy for Suspecting the Very Things You Later Discover Were True

One of the most damaging aspects of narcissistic abuse is being made to feel mentally unstable for questioning behaviour that eventually turns out to be exactly what you suspected.

You notice inconsistencies.

You question the secrecy.

You recognise that something doesn't add up.

But instead of receiving an honest explanation, you're accused of being paranoid, jealous, insecure or controlling.

“You're imagining things.”

“You're crazy.”

“You need help.”

“Why can't you just trust me?”

And eventually, you start questioning yourself rather than their behaviour.

The Cruellest Part of Gaslighting

They don't just hide the truth. They can make you feel ashamed for looking for it.

You apologise for asking questions.

You ignore your instincts.

You convince yourself you're overthinking.

You become frightened of raising concerns because every conversation ends with you defending your mental health.

Then one day, you discover the lies, the betrayal or the behaviour you were repeatedly told never happened.

And suddenly, everything makes sense.

You weren't imagining those particular inconsistencies.

You weren't wrong to ask reasonable questions.

You were being encouraged to distrust your own judgement.

But even after discovering the truth, the emotional damage can remain.

You may struggle to trust people.

You may constantly second-guess yourself.

You may feel compelled to gather evidence before expressing an opinion.

Because repeated gaslighting can teach you to question yourself even when the person manipulating you is no longer there.

💜 The Things Narcissists Teach Us About Ourselves

One of the hardest lessons after narcissistic abuse is learning to trust yourself again.

Not every suspicion will be correct, but you deserve honest communication, respect and the freedom to raise concerns without being humiliated.

My book, The Things Narcissists Teach Us About Ourselves: Finding Self-Worth, Healthy Boundaries, Healing & Freedom After Narcissistic Abuse, explores rebuilding confidence, recognising your worth and developing healthier boundaries after emotional manipulation.

Because healing isn't just about discovering what someone lied about.

It's about rebuilding the confidence they undermined while convincing you that you were the problem.

Understanding Narcissism, by Elizabeth Shaw.

A Healthy Relationship Will Never Require You to Lose Yourself

“A healthy relationship will never require you to give up your hopes, your dreams, your loved ones, your money, or your dignity. A narcissistic one will.”

One of the most damaging aspects of narcissistic abuse is how gradually someone can take away your independence.

It rarely happens overnight.

First, they criticise your friends.

Then they make you feel guilty for spending time with family.

They discourage your ambitions, question your decisions and make you feel selfish for wanting anything that doesn't benefit them.

Eventually, your entire life revolves around keeping them happy.

This is how coercive control can develop.

You stop pursuing your dreams because they cause arguments.

You stop seeing people because it's easier than dealing with accusations.

You surrender financial independence to avoid conflict.

And you sacrifice your dignity trying to prove your love.

But love should never require you to abandon yourself.

💜 Rebuild Your Confidence After Narcissistic Abuse

My CBT Recovery Programme is designed to help you recognise harmful thought patterns, challenge self-blame, rebuild confidence and develop healthier boundaries.

Because recovery isn't just about leaving someone who controlled you.

It's about rediscovering the person you were before you learned to put yourself last.

Understanding Narcissism, by Elizabeth Shaw.

Why Narcissists Turn Against You When You Finally See Through Their Manipulation

“They don't dislike you because you've done something wrong. They dislike you because you see through their lies, manipulation and twisted truths, and their games no longer work on you.”

One of the most confusing experiences in a narcissistic relationship is watching someone suddenly turn against you when you begin recognising their behaviour.

For months or even years, you tried to understand them.

You forgave their mistakes.

You accepted their explanations.

You questioned yourself instead of questioning their behaviour.

But then something changed.

You started noticing the contradictions.

You recognised the blame-shifting.

You stopped accepting excuses.

And suddenly, the person who once claimed to love you began treating you like their enemy.

7 Reasons Narcissistic People May React Badly When You See Through Them

1. You Stop Believing Their Excuses

They can no longer explain away every lie, broken promise or hurtful action.

2. You Recognise Their Manipulation

You begin noticing when guilt, fear or emotional pressure is being used to influence your decisions.

3. You Stop Taking Responsibility for Everything

Instead of automatically apologising, you recognise that someone else's behaviour isn't always your responsibility.

4. You Start Questioning Their Version of Events

When they rewrite conversations or deny things they've said, you become more confident in your own recollections.

5. You Establish Boundaries

You stop accepting disrespect simply to avoid an argument.

6. You Become Less Emotionally Reactive

You recognise when someone is deliberately provoking an argument and choose not to participate.

7. You No Longer Need Their Approval

Perhaps the biggest change is that you stop measuring your worth through their opinions.

But Here's What People Often Overlook

Recognising manipulation doesn't automatically undo the psychological damage it caused.

You might understand exactly what happened and still struggle with:

Guilt whenever you say no.

Anxiety when someone becomes angry.

Constantly second-guessing your decisions.

Feeling responsible for other people's emotions.

Replaying conversations and wondering whether you overreacted.

Struggling to trust your own judgement.

This is why understanding narcissistic behaviour and recovering from narcissistic abuse are two different things.

You can recognise every red flag and still carry the beliefs that developed while you were being manipulated.

💜 How To Heal From Narcissistic Abuse: A CBT Recovery Programme

Have you learnt to recognise narcissistic manipulation but still struggle with guilt, self-doubt and low confidence?

My structured, step-by-step CBT Recovery Programme is designed to help you move beyond recognising harmful behaviour and begin rebuilding the way you think about yourself.

Through practical CBT-based tools, you'll explore how to:

Challenge negative thinking patterns and self-blame.

Rebuild confidence and self-worth.

Recognise emotional manipulation and unhealthy relationship dynamics.

Understand trauma bonding and emotional triggers.

Strengthen boundaries without overwhelming guilt.

Develop healthier ways of thinking and coping.

Because the most important part of healing isn't getting the narcissist to admit what they did.

It's learning to stop believing the damaging things their behaviour taught you about yourself.

You don't need to convince them that you've seen through their manipulation.

You don't need to prove that you know the truth.

And you don't need their approval to move forward.

Sometimes the greatest freedom comes when you stop trying to make someone understand you and start trusting yourself again.

Understanding Narcissism, by Elizabeth Shaw.

🚨 A NARCISSIST WON'T ALWAYS CHANGE. SOMETIMES THEY JUST FIND SOMEONE NEW TO BLAME.

A NARCISSIST WILL BLAME EVERYTHING ON EVERYONE ELSE, REFUSE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND MOVE ON TO SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T YET RECOGNISE THEIR MANIPULATION.

You spend months, sometimes years, trying to make them understand.

You explain how their behaviour hurts you.

You forgive the lies.

You give them another chance.

You believe their promises to change.

And every time things go wrong, somehow, it's your fault.

You're too sensitive.

You're too demanding.

You expect too much.

You don't appreciate everything they've done.

THEN ONE DAY, THE RELATIONSHIP ENDS.

And suddenly, they're with someone new.

They're charming again.

They're attentive.

They're making promises.

They're presenting themselves as the perfect partner.

Meanwhile, they're telling everyone how difficult you were.

AND YOU'RE LEFT WONDERING WHY THEY COULDN'T TREAT YOU THAT WAY.

But here's something important.

A new relationship doesn't automatically mean someone has changed.

A different partner doesn't erase unhealthy patterns.

And blaming every previous partner doesn't demonstrate personal growth.

REAL CHANGE REQUIRES ACCOUNTABILITY, SELF-REFLECTION AND CONSISTENTLY DIFFERENT BEHAVIOUR.

Some people would rather change partners than confront their own behaviour.

They move from relationship to relationship, repeating the same arguments, excuses and blame-shifting.

And every time, someone else becomes the problem.

YOU CAN'T FORCE SOMEONE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY WHEN THEY'RE DETERMINED TO MAKE EVERYTHING YOUR FAULT.

Sometimes, the healthiest thing you can do is stop arguing, stop explaining and start protecting your peace.

📖 SICK OF DEALING WITH DICKHEADS?

That's exactly why I wrote:

HOW TO DEAL WITH DICKHEADS: A SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR THE DIFFICULT PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE

For anyone who's exhausted by the blame-shifters, manipulators, drama creators and boundary pushers who refuse to take responsibility for their behaviour.

Learn how to recognise difficult people, stop pointless arguments, strengthen your boundaries and protect your emotional wellbeing.

Because you don't need to spend the rest of your life trying to convince someone to treat you with basic respect.

💥 YOU CAN'T MAKE A DICKHEAD TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY. BUT YOU CAN STOP TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR BEHAVIOUR.

💔 WHY NARCISSISTS PLAY THE VICTIM WHILE RUNNING A SMEAR CAMPAIGN AGAINST YOU

NARCISSISTS CAN BE MASTERS OF MANIPULATION. THEY PLAY THE POOR, ABUSED VICTIM WHILE SMEARING THE REPUTATION OF THE PERSON WHO FINALLY STOOD UP TO THEM.

You establish boundaries.

You stop accepting disrespect.

You finally walk away.

And suddenly, you’re the villain in a story they’ve carefully rewritten.

Here’s how narcissistic smear campaigns can work:

1. THEY REWRITE HISTORY. Their harmful behaviour disappears from the story.

2. THEY PLAY THE VICTIM. They describe themselves as abandoned, betrayed or mistreated.

3. THEY ATTACK YOUR CHARACTER. You’re labelled unstable, selfish or cruel.

4. THEY RECRUIT OTHERS. Friends and relatives may be encouraged to take sides.

5. THEY PROVOKE REACTIONS. Your distress becomes supposed evidence against you.

BUT REMEMBER: SOMEONE ELSE’S VERSION OF EVENTS DOESN’T DEFINE YOUR REALITY.

Repeated gaslighting and character attacks can leave you questioning yourself.

💔 WHY NARCISSISTS HURT YOU, BLAME YOUR REACTION AND THEN PLAY THE VICTIM

A NARCISSIST WILL HURT YOU, BLAME YOU FOR REACTING, THEN TELL EVERYONE THEY’RE THE VICTIM.

One of the most confusing forms of narcissistic manipulation is when someone causes emotional pain, then makes your reaction the problem.

Here’s how the cycle works:

1. THEY PROVOKE YOU. Repeated criticism, lies or disrespect push you towards emotional exhaustion.

2. YOU REACT. You cry, become frustrated or finally defend yourself.

3. THEY SHIFT BLAME. Suddenly, your reaction matters more than their behaviour.

4. THEY PLAY THE VICTIM. They tell others how badly you’ve treated them, leaving out what happened beforehand.

5. YOU QUESTION YOURSELF. You begin wondering whether you’re actually the problem.

But reacting to mistreatment doesn’t automatically make you responsible for causing it.

Repeated manipulation can leave you trapped in guilt, self-blame and overthinking.

Understanding Narcissism, by Elizabeth Shaw.

💔 MY LOYALTY KEPT ME IN SITUATIONS THAT COMMON SENSE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN ME OUT OF.

One of the hardest lessons you learn after narcissistic abuse is that being loyal to someone doesn't mean you should keep abandoning yourself.

You saw the red flags.

You recognised the lies.

You felt the disrespect.

You knew something wasn't right.

But you stayed because you believed loyalty meant not giving up on someone you loved.

You gave them another chance because everyone makes mistakes.

You forgave because you understood their past.

You stayed because you remembered the person they were at the beginning.

You kept your promises even when they repeatedly broke theirs.

And somewhere along the way, your loyalty became more important than your own happiness.

Here are seven painful lessons many people learn after experiencing narcissistic abuse.

1. Loyalty Without Respect Becomes Self-Abandonment. You cannot keep sacrificing your wellbeing to prove your love.

2. Understanding Someone's Pain Doesn't Excuse Their Behaviour. Their difficult past doesn't give them permission to hurt you.

3. Forgiveness Doesn't Require Another Chance. You can let go of resentment without reopening the relationship.

4. Potential Isn't the Same as Reality. You may have loved who they could become rather than accepting how they consistently treated you.

5. Love Shouldn't Require Endless Sacrifice. Healthy relationships involve mutual care, accountability and respect.

6. Boundaries Don't Make You Disloyal. Saying no to mistreatment isn't betrayal.

7. You Can Be Loyal to Yourself Too. Your feelings, needs, dreams and emotional wellbeing deserve the same commitment you gave everyone else.

And perhaps the most heartbreaking realisation?

You were so afraid of giving up on them that you didn't notice how much you were giving up on yourself.

But recognising this doesn't mean you were foolish or weak.

Emotional manipulation, fear, hope and trauma bonding can make leaving an unhealthy relationship incredibly difficult.

The lesson isn't to stop being loyal.

It's to stop confusing loyalty with tolerating repeated mistreatment.

You can remain a kind, compassionate and loving person without allowing someone unlimited opportunities to hurt you.

Your loyalty was never the problem. Learning where it belongs can change your life.

💔 WHY DO NARCISSISTS MOVE ON SO QUICKLY AFTER A BREAKUP?

NOBODY SEEMS TO MOVE FROM ONE RELATIONSHIP TO THE NEXT FASTER THAN A NARCISSIST WHO STRUGGLES WITH GENUINE LOVE AND COMMITMENT.

You’ve barely had time to process the breakup, yet they’re already with someone new.

And you’re left wondering:

Did they ever love me? Was I that easy to replace?

Some people with strong narcissistic traits seek new relationships quickly because they struggle with being alone, crave validation or avoid confronting their behaviour.

But their ability to move on quickly doesn’t measure your worth.

Here are three things to remember:

1. Their new relationship doesn’t mean they’ve changed. Unhealthy patterns can follow someone into their next relationship.

2. You’re not falling behind. Taking time to grieve and recover is healthy.

3. Being replaced doesn’t make you replaceable. Your value was never determined by their commitment.

Understanding Narcissism, by Elizabeth Shaw.

🚨 7 WAYS NARCISSISTS GASLIGHT YOU INTO BELIEVING EVERYTHING IS YOUR FAULT

NARCISSISTS DON'T ALWAYS APOLOGISE FOR HURTING YOU. INSTEAD, THEY GASLIGHT YOU INTO BELIEVING YOU'RE THE ONE WHO CAUSED THE PROBLEM.

DON'T FALL FOR IT. YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR SOMEONE ELSE'S DISRESPECT JUST BECAUSE THEY REFUSE TO TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY.

Have you ever confronted someone about their behaviour, only to end up apologising to THEM?

You started the conversation because they lied.

Because they insulted you.

Because they betrayed your trust.

Because they did something that genuinely hurt you.

But somehow, by the end of the argument, you're the one feeling guilty.

You're apologising for your tone.

You're defending your intentions.

You're questioning whether you misunderstood everything.

And the original issue has completely disappeared.

This is how gaslighting and blame-shifting can work in emotionally abusive relationships.

Here are seven ways someone with strong narcissistic traits may manipulate you into taking responsibility for their behaviour.

1. They Deny What Happened

“I never said that.”

“You're making things up.”

“That never happened.”

Even when you clearly remember the conversation, they repeatedly challenge your version of events until you begin doubting yourself.

2. They Blame Your Reaction

Instead of acknowledging their hurtful behaviour, they focus entirely on how you responded.

“You wouldn't have been upset if you weren't so sensitive.”

3. They Turn Themselves Into the Victim

You confront them about something they did.

Suddenly, they're accusing you of attacking them, mistreating them or making their life miserable.

4. They Bring Up Your Past Mistakes

You ask why they lied.

They remind you of something you did three years ago.

The conversation becomes about defending yourself rather than addressing their dishonesty.

5. They Accuse You of Doing What They're Doing

They may accuse you of lying, manipulating or being controlling while refusing to examine their own behaviour.

6. They Make You Feel Guilty for Having Boundaries

You say something is unacceptable.

They accuse you of being selfish, cruel or unreasonable.

Eventually, you may begin feeling guilty simply for protecting yourself.

7. They Withhold Affection Until You Apologise

They become cold, distant or silent.

You feel anxious and desperate to restore the connection.

So you apologise, even when you weren't responsible for what happened.

And here's where the real damage begins.

After months or years of this behaviour, you may no longer need the narcissistic person to blame you.

You start blaming yourself automatically.

Someone becomes angry, and you assume you've done something wrong.

Someone withdraws, and you panic.

Someone criticises you, and you immediately question your worth.

You replay conversations, searching for what you should have said differently.

You apologise for having feelings.

You struggle to trust your memories.

And you become so accustomed to defending yourself that even ordinary disagreements can feel threatening.

This is one reason recovery from narcissistic abuse can be so difficult.

The relationship may have ended, but the self-doubt can remain.

You may still hear their criticism in your own thoughts.

You may still feel responsible for other people's emotions.

You may still believe that if someone is unhappy with you, you must have done something wrong.

But here's something important.

Taking responsibility for your own behaviour is healthy. Taking responsibility for someone else's manipulation is not.

You are allowed to have feelings.

You are allowed to disagree.

You are allowed to remember events differently.

And you are allowed to expect honesty, respect and accountability in your relationships.

You don't have to keep proving that your pain is real to someone who repeatedly dismisses it.

💜 HOW TO STOP BLAMING YOURSELF AFTER NARCISSISTIC ABUSE

One of the most damaging effects of prolonged gaslighting is the way it can change how you think about yourself.

You may begin believing:

“Everything is my fault.”

“I'm too sensitive.”

“I always ruin relationships.”

“I can't trust my own judgement.”

“Maybe I deserved how they treated me.”

But these beliefs can be challenged. And you can begin rebuilding your confidence.

That's why I created:

Narcissists Don't Always Have True Friends – Sometimes They Have Enablers Who Protect Their Behaviour

One of the most painful parts of narcissistic abuse is watching other people defend someone who has repeatedly hurt you.

You know what happened behind closed doors, yet their friends, relatives or supporters may see a completely different person.

They believe the charming version: The narcissistic person presents themselves as kind, generous and misunderstood.

They excuse harmful behaviour: Their anger, manipulation and cruelty are dismissed as stress or personality differences.

They blame you: Instead of questioning the behaviour, they question your reaction.

They minimise your experiences: You're told you're exaggerating, being too sensitive or holding grudges.

They pressure you to forgive: Maintaining peace becomes more important than acknowledging the harm.

They repeat their version of events: You may find yourself defending your reputation against stories you never told.

Not everyone around someone with narcissistic traits is an enabler, but repeated excuses and denial can allow harmful behaviour to continue.

The hardest lesson is realising that not everyone who knows what happened will stand up for you.

This betrayal can leave you questioning your judgement, struggling to trust others and feeling emotionally isolated.

💜 You deserve to rebuild your confidence without needing everyone else's validation.

My How To Heal From Narcissistic Abuse: A CBT Recovery Programme helps you challenge self-blame, strengthen boundaries and begin trusting yourself again.

You don't need their approval to acknowledge what you experienced.
