As I discuss in the video, I'm curious how many children can actually read Treasure Island nowadays. Maybe it's a hang-up that I've had ever since I struggled with this book when I was in 2nd grade. But below is an excerpt from Chapter 25. What age do you think this is most appropriate for?
I had scarce gained a position on the bowspirit, when the flying jib flapped and filled upon the other tack, with a report like a gun. The schooner trembled to her keel under the reverse; but the next moment, the other sails still drawing, the jib flapped back again, and hung idle. This had nearly tossed me off into the sea; and now I lost no time, crawled back along the bowspirit, and tumbled head foremost on the deck. I was on the lee side of the forecastle, and the mainsail, which was still drawing, concealed from me a certain portion of the after-deck. Not a soul was to be seen. The planks, which had not been swabbed since the mutiny, bore the print of many feet; and an empty bottle, broken by the neck, tumbled to and fro like a live thing in the scuppers. Suddenly the Hispaniola came right into the wind. The jibs behind me cracked aloud; the rubber slammed to; the whole ship gave a sickening heave and shudder, and at the same moment the main-boom swung inboard, the sheet groaning in the blocks, and showed me the lee after deck.
I've finished A Dream of Red Chambers, so that is now 3 out of the 4 Great Chinese Classics done. (see playlist below). Next up will be Outlaws of the Marsh, which I hope to get to sometime this year.
This is the last of my vacation videos. It's now back to my regular programming of book and movie reviews. First on the list will be catching up on my summer reading book reviews.
I'm trying to reply to some of the comments I got yesterday on various videos, but I find I can no longer view those comments. Is anyone else on Youtube having this problem or is it just me? Hopefully it's a temporary glitch and it will fix itself in a couple hours. In the meantime, apologies if you left a comment on one of my videos yesterday, and I haven't responded to it yet.
