BREAKING NEWS

US President Donald Trump has called on Congress to introduce mandatory minimum prison sentences for people convicted of defrauding Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security programmes, warning that offenders should face lengthy jail terms.

Trump said probation should no longer be an option for those convicted of stealing from the federal benefit programmes, with the length of imprisonment increasing according to the amount stolen.

He also proposed doubling the prison sentence for convicted fraudsters who are caught committing the offence for a second time. Trump further called for state and local politicians who knowingly fail to stop fraud they have the power to prevent to be held personally liable for the resulting losses.

The proposal is aimed specifically at fraud involving US government benefit programmes. Trump did not provide specific sentencing ranges or explain the legal standard for determining when an elected official would be considered responsible for failing to stop fraud.

BREAKING NEWS : 2027: “We Have No Candidates, No Political Party” — INEC Chairman Reaffirms Neutrality

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to neutrality, fairness and transparency ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Amupitan made the statement during a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, as part of INEC’s stakeholder engagement and preparations for its zonal-level readiness assessment ahead of the elections.

The INEC chairman said traditional institutions remained important stakeholders because of their influence and grassroots reach. He also said the commission had started preparations early because of the scale and complexity of conducting elections across Nigeria, with systems being tested, audited and strengthened ahead of the polls.

“We have no candidates, we have no political party, we have no interest other than the sovereign will of the people of Nigeria,” Amupitan said, stressing INEC’s commitment to conducting the elections without favouring any candidate or party.

He urged traditional rulers to discourage political violence and hate-driven campaigns, particularly among young people, while calling on eligible Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process, including the collection of their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Responding, the Emir of Zazzau urged INEC to ensure the timely delivery and thorough testing of election equipment and sensitive materials. He also called for timely information, adequate security and prompt announcement of results to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

BREAKING NEWS

Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has questioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s absence from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), asking why Nigeria’s President has not attended the global gathering for three consecutive years.

Obi raised the question while commenting on Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama’s address at the 81st UNGA, where he praised Mahama’s leadership and representation of Ghana on the global stage.

He noted that Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous country, should have its President providing leadership and representing the country at major international gatherings.

Although Vice President Kashim Shettima attended the 81st UNGA and represented Nigeria, Obi questioned Tinubu’s continued absence, particularly at a time when Nigeria is facing significant challenges both domestically and internationally.

“Where is the President?” Obi asked, while calling for prayers for Tinubu’s return and leadership in addressing the challenges facing the country.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s return to Nigeria has been delayed following a last-minute change to his travel plans, with Presidency sources now indicating that he is expected to arrive in Lagos on Tuesday, September 29.

BREAKING NEWS

The Lagos State Police Command has identified Inspector Osumah Frank as the officer seen in a viral video making political and ethnic remarks about Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi and the Igbo people.

In the video, Frank, who was wearing police uniform while travelling in a public vehicle, was heard saying that Obi could not become President because he is Igbo. He also made comments about Obi’s 2027 presidential ambition and suggested that the race should be between President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

The inspector was also reported to have made other allegations and derogatory comments about Obi. These claims were made by the officer in the video and have not been established by the police.

Reacting to the video, the Lagos State Police Command said it had commenced appropriate disciplinary action against Frank in line with established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Command stressed that the remarks were made in Frank’s personal capacity and did not represent the official position, views or disposition of the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force. Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, also reiterated that officers must maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public.

BREAKING NEWS

Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has urged Nigerians, particularly young voters, to make informed choices in the 2027 general election, stressing that citizens must take responsibility for the candidates they elect.

Kukah made the call on Friday while speaking on the sidelines of the 70th anniversary celebration of Saint Finbarr’s College in Lagos. He encouraged voters to carefully examine the backgrounds, records and qualifications of candidates before deciding who to support.

The bishop urged Nigerians to make use of information available online to research politicians seeking their votes, rather than relying solely on political parties, campaign promises or other people’s opinions.

Kukah also said voters should not place the entire responsibility for credible elections on institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the government or security agencies. According to him, citizens also have a responsibility for the outcomes produced by their choices at the polls.

He therefore urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 election with greater awareness and responsibility, particularly as political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the polls.

BREAKING NEWS : 2027 Elections: INEC Chairman Warns Funding Shortfall Could Undermine Security, Logistics

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan has said adequate funding will be critical to providing the security and logistics needed for the successful conduct of the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan spoke on Wednesday in Owerri, Imo State, while delivering a goodwill message at the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, which focused on developing a roadmap for effective election security management.

He said INEC’s responsibilities extend beyond conducting presidential and National Assembly elections to governorship and state assembly polls, voter registration and political party registration. He added that the commission also relies on security agencies for election and voter-registration operations, making adequate funding essential.

The INEC chairman stressed that sufficient resources are needed to deploy personnel and electoral materials across LGAs, wards and polling units. He also called for stronger coordination among INEC, the police and other security agencies through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, while urging senior police officers to maintain professional neutrality and protect the integrity of the ballot.

Sanwo-Olu, UN Partners Seek Solutions to Lagos Flooding, Coastal Threats

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has held a high-level roundtable with the United Nations Global Compact Networks and regional partners from Africa and the Caribbean to develop solutions to climate threats facing Lagos.

The meeting focused on urgent measures to protect coastal communities and critical infrastructure from rising sea levels, coastal erosion and recurring flooding, while also exploring sustainable financing for climate-resilience projects.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos, as a low-lying coastal megacity, is already experiencing the effects of climate change through flooding and increasing pressure on roads, homes and businesses. He stressed that the scale of the challenge requires practical action rather than prolonged policy discussions.

The governor also called for stronger partnerships with the private sector and international development institutions, saying government funding alone is insufficient to finance the long-term infrastructure needed to protect Lagos from severe environmental threats.
