I binged all of Crystal Lake last night, and while I have plenty of thoughts and uncertainty, there's still tons I liked.
For one, Linda Cardellini as Pamela is a top tier casting choice. She manages to capture empathy and a sweet mother's heart, but is also bathshit insane. Will Catlett as Levon Brooke is also a good addition to the series as a potential love interest, I just hope we see more of him. Callum Vinson as kid Jason is just adorable. It's sad to see him as a young and sweet boy who you know has a terrible fate. The kills (even though they can feel a little few and far between) are solid. Sometimes there's a little too much cgi and they really over use mouth trauma. The atmosphere of the camp and filming in the same town as the OG F13th is great. It really captures that old school vibe thats been missing since probably part 6.
Here's where my complaints are. For one, way too many side characters that don't amount to much and their roles could have been given to someone else. Officer Dorf, his girlfriend/hookup, and even Brooke's sister felt like roles that could have been passed down to more important characters or atleast trimmed. There's 8 episodes, but I feel like the middle drags down and almost gets derailed completely by episode 7.
The main element of the series I am unsure of his Jason's origin. In episode 7 (which is shot on real film, which is cool) shows that Elias worked for a government testing facility while Pam was pregnant. After almost having a miscarriage, Elias signs her up for a program that will restore her womb and save Jason. As Jason grows up, he is constantly tested on and taken away by Elias, while Pam is put on extreme psychiatric medication (which is responsible for her snapping. As it turns out, Elias thought Jason was a perfect candidate for an extreme super soldier style testing. The experiments end up giving Jason the ability to grow larger and stronger throughout whatever trauma he goes through. For example, Pamela accidently drowns him as a baby and he instantly revives. Of course, Pamela hates all of this and ends up killing one of the scientists and takes Jason away. This origin for his powers does explain why he can't die, why he seems to grow larger in every movie and why he goes from a boy to an almost grown man in part 2. My issue is the "science experiment gone wrong" angle doesn't feel very Friday the 13th. Maybe I'm a hypocrite because I like Jason X or JGTH, but this entire episode doesn't feel like a F13th story and was a chore to get through.
The final episode was definitely an improvement and I wish we saw more stuff like this. Elias shows up at Crystal Lake with some goons, and they plan to take Pamela back. During this, grown Jason finally makes his long awaited appearance and goes on a short massacre. He kills one dude by smashing his jaw with a stick, and eventually crushes his dad's head. Hell, we see Crazy Ralph shoot him almost point blank in the head and Jason simply disappears. Pamela and him have a sweet moment during this chaos, but I'm unsure how this will tie into her massacre as I assumed she never saw Jason again after he drowned.
Overall, the show is worth watching for the preformances alone. The score, camera work, and gore are top notch. I just think this was a weird ass re-introduction to the franchise.
Did a rehaul of a TOTS 2018 mask, using a 2026 copy. This year, these base masks are already pretty good! I just did some burnt umber dry brushing, some dark grey washes, and then finally the dried blood. I also messed with the hairline
Our Ohio trip is done! There were lots of cool stops and finds we discovered, and I'm excited to show them off in today's video at 5 pm est and next week's video, which will premiere at the same time on Tuesday.
Our giant Ohio trip is going well! Getting lots of footage for multiple videos, however, the highlight was definitely meeting James and Chelsea from Dead Meat! They are the nicest and most down to earth celebs you could EVER meet at a horror event! We also met Nathan Baesel, aka Leslie Vernon!
We'll be attending HORRORHOUND WEEKEND/MASK FEST in Cincinnati Ohio ALL weekend! Considering the long drive up there and all the shops we found, get ready for at least THREE separate Fearsome Finds videos!

This is a Shallow Grave FX H6 mask that I repainted completely! It was fun to work on it since Halloween 6's mask had such a layered paint job
