What would you do if you discovered at 52 that the story you had believed about your life wasn’t the complete truth?

For Al Isaacs, one unexpected conversation revealed something that would change his understanding of his identity forever: he had been adopted.

But the discovery came with another painful revelation — almost everyone in his family had known except him.

By then, Al’s adoptive parents were both suffering from dementia, leaving him with questions that could no longer easily be answered.

So he began searching.

Through DNA testing, genealogy research and online detective work, Al began uncovering pieces of a family history he had never known. Along the way, he discovered a half-sister who had also been searching for him.

And eventually, his search led him to his birth mother.

On this episode of Podcast with Sheila, Al shares the deeply personal journey of discovering his adoption later in life, searching for his biological family and confronting questions about identity, belonging, family and truth.

We’ll talk about:

* Discovering you were adopted later in life
* Finding out that your family knew
* Coping when the people who could provide answers can no longer do so
* Searching for biological family
* DNA testing and genealogy
* Discovering a previously unknown sibling
* Finding a birth mother after decades
* Meeting your biological mother as an adult
* Making sense of family secrets
* Resilience and moving forward
* Finding peace when your understanding of your past changes

This is ultimately a story about identity, resilience, love, family and the human desire to know where we come from.

She hasn’t even started university yet, but she’s already thinking about starting her own sewing business.

This week at Skilled Hands, we welcomed a young learner for a 5.5-hour beginner sewing session after her mum gifted her a sewing machine for her birthday.

Rather than simply having a machine at home, she wanted to learn how to use it properly — because she already has a vision of building something with the skill.

During the session, she learned:

🧵 Sewing machine parts and functions
🪡 Threading and bobbin winding
✂️ Machine control and straight stitching
〰️ Curves and topstitching
📏 Seams and seam allowances
🧵 Different seam-finishing techniques
🔗 How to fit a wide-tooth zip
👜 And finally, how to bring everything together to make her own tote bag.

This is why practical skills matter.

A skill can build confidence.
Confidence can develop an idea.
And an idea can become a business.

And we want more young people to have access to opportunities like this.

🧵 CREATIVE YOUNG MAKERS SEWING PROGRAMME

Our funded after-school sewing programme starts 9 September 2026 for 12 children and young people aged 8–16, with priority for children living in NG7 and NG8.

The programme will develop practical sewing, creativity and confidence, with participants working towards a final community showcase on 13 January 2027, where they will share their creations and learning journey.

📩 Want your child to take part? Get in touch with us at [skills.hands.org@gmail.com].

If your child does not qualify for one of the funded places or lives outside the catchment area but you would still like them to participate, please contact us about our small-fee option, subject to availability.

Don’t underestimate what a young person can build when they are given the opportunity to learn.

HE WANTED A LEGACY, BUT HE FORGOT THE CHILDREN | A Powerful Story About Fatherhood, Responsibility & Family

What does it really mean to leave a legacy?

Is it the number of children you have, or the lives you truly invest in?

In today’s emotional and thought-provoking story on Podcast with Sheila, we explore the life of a man who believed that having many children across different relationships would make him remembered. But while he pursued his idea of legacy, many mothers carried the responsibilities alone, and many children grew up longing for a father’s presence.

This fictionalised story, inspired by real-life experiences, explores important conversations around fatherhood, absent parents, responsibility, relationships, blended families, marriage, parenting, emotional wellbeing, and the impact our choices have on children.

This story is not about judging people. It is about encouraging reflection, accountability, and meaningful conversations about family, parenting, and the kind of legacy we leave behind.

💬 What do you think creates a true legacy?
💬 Is legacy about numbers, or about the lives we impact?
💬 How can parents better support children emotionally and financially?

Share your thoughts respectfully in the comments.

If this story touched you, please LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE, and SUBSCRIBE to Podcast with Sheila for more real-life inspired stories, relationship discussions, family conversations, and honest reflections on issues many people experience but rarely talk about.
