FAT Earth Studios

Fat Earth Studios is a Godot game development channel where I share tutorials based on the projects I'm building.

I spent 10 years writing software in the aerospace industry, and now I'm using that experience to make games and help other developers avoid some of the headaches I ran into along the way.

If you are learning Godot, making your first real project, or trying to level up beyond beginner tutorials, this channel is for you.

Topics include:
• Godot development tips for larger projects
• Game architecture, scene organization, and scalable systems
• Animation, physics, Enemy behavior, tools, and workflow improvements
• Common problems that can quietly kill a project
• Practical lessons from building a full game

New videos include deep dives into specific systems and lessons learned from developing real projects.

Subscribe if you want to build better games in Godot.

I'm sorry to miss the hangout today, but I'm feeling a bit under the weather, so I'm going to have to skip today's stream. I think my voice would be quite unhappy with me were I to talk for over two hours straight.

I've been working on some improvements that I'm excited to share during next week's stream, and I'm looking forward to hanging out with you all then. Thanks for understand, and see you next week!

I know the first one may be a sin, but these are a few RPGs that I have never played.

I've been testing out different types of RPG combat for the vertical slice. Would you be interested in watching me try out one of these games for the first time on stream? Which should I start with?

These are games that have already been suggested. If I've missed on you'd like to see, let me know in the comments. Preferably something available on Steam or a console I can stream from.

Going live today at 1:30 PM Eastern (a little later than usual)!

How should magic change the world in the vertical slice Godot RPG? I’ll show the current build, pull up the battle action diagram, and take your Godot and game design questions. If the conversation takes us there, we might start a second battle arena too.

I had a crazy vision: transform the top-down game world into a battle arena, then add a few pretty spells to experiment with.

Then the ice spell extinguished the bonfire, and changed the direction of the entire ability system. Perhaps the game with it!

In my new video, I walk through how building each piece around one focused responsibility gave me a stable foundation for experimentation, and how that experiment revealed a game design I never would have reached through planning alone.

Going live in about an hour at 1:00pm ET today!

Instead of racing towards something new, I'm slowing down to walk through the project, explain why the pieces are separated the way they are, use the diagrams to trace how everything fits together, and answer questions.

This is meant to be a fun hangout while we go over Godot 4 development and general game design ideas. As usual, everyone is invited to ask questions, distract me into telling good stories or sharing unrelated design tips, and have a good time.

See you guys soon!

Going live today at 1:00PM ET! Coding the battle system for the Godot 4 RGP.
Demonstrating transition into battle, loading the battle arena and UI, and coding the connections and battle actions once battle starts. For the last half, continuing to build the areas surrounding the beach level.

Thursday, September 3 at 1:00 PM ET, it’s time for me to shut up and code.

The battle scene works when ran on its own. I'll be coding all the pieces together so that it work in the actual game: a real battle transition, UI, BattleSession, actor positioning, and a BattleAction that casts a spell and deals damage.

Come hang out and see how much of the plan survives contact with Godot. Hit “Notify me” on the stream page if you want a reminder!
