A MEXT scholarship took Harsha to Japan, but the journey started with one professor. 🇮🇳🇯🇵 Want to know how Harsha turned one opportunity into a career in Japan?

Read more on her journey here: bit.ly/4hGb6bA

After completing her Master’s in Biotechnology, Harsha wanted to continue in research. She reached out to professors whose work matched her interests, and one reply from Kyushu University opened a completely unexpected path to Japan. 🔬

That opportunity led to the MEXT scholarship, which at the time covered her tuition, airfare to Japan and back, and provided a monthly stipend of around ₹85,000–₹87,000. 🎓💰

But the scholarship was only the beginning. Harsha had to adapt to a new country, culture and language while building her research career. Over the years, she went from MEXT scholar → PhD → postdoctoral researcher → Assistant Professor at Kyushu University. 🇯🇵

Her story is a reminder that sometimes, one opportunity can open a door you never expected to walk through.

Moving to Germany for your Master’s? Here are 6 things you’re entitled to as a student, and most Indians only find out about them months later. 🇩🇪

1️⃣ Travel pass (Deutschland-Semesterticket): many universities include a travel pass in the fee you pay each semester. It covers unlimited local trains, trams and buses across Germany. Check your university’s fee breakdown before you buy any other pass.

2️⃣ Free counselling: every university city has a Studierendenwerk, a student services office that also runs canteens and hostels. Most offer free, confidential sessions with a counsellor, often in English. Feeling homesick or stressed in your first few months is common, so use it.

3️⃣ Legal help for €15: stuck in a fight with your landlord or employer? On a low income, you can ask your local Amtsgericht (district court) for a Beratungshilfeschein, a certificate that gets you advice from a lawyer for €15 at most. Your university’s student union (AStA) often helps for free too.

4️⃣ A bank account, even with no credit history: Schufa is Germany’s credit score, much like CIBIL in India. As a new arrival you won’t have one yet, and some banks may hesitate. By law, every bank must still offer you a basic account, called a Basiskonto.

5️⃣ Your Schufa report, free: landlords in Germany often check your Schufa before renting to you. Under EU privacy law (GDPR), which gives you the right to see the data companies hold on you, you can request a free copy called a Datenkopie. Check it and get any mistakes fixed.

6️⃣ Tax money back: got a student job (Werkstudent) and tax was cut from your salary? You can file a tax return for free on ELSTER, the government’s online tax portal, for up to 4 years back. Many students get most or all of it refunded.
Still in India? Save this for your first week in Germany. Just landed? Start with #1 and #4.

What would make you leave Microsoft and start over in the US?

Aditi had already built a strong career after graduating from BITS Pilani and working at Microsoft India. But she wanted to go deeper into Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and explore the kind of technical and research opportunities she hadn’t pursued full-time. 🎓

So she moved to the US for her Master’s at UC San Diego and had to build her career all over again.
There were no campus placements waiting for her. She had to apply, network, reach out to her connections and find her own way in.

One referral led to an opportunity at Adobe, where she interviewed with four different teams before joining as an intern. 💻

That internship eventually turned into a full-time offer.
Today, Aditi is a Software Engineer II at Adobe, working in Search and Recommendations across products including Photoshop, Lightroom, Creative Cloud and Acrobat. ✨

Her journey is a reminder that sometimes, a career change isn’t about leaving something behind.
It’s about getting closer to what you actually want to build.

What do you do when six years of pharmacy no longer feels like the career you want?

After spending six years studying pharmacy, Amala realised that the conventional path into hospital pharmacy wasn’t for her. Instead, she started exploring what happened behind the medicines, drug development, pharma companies and clinical research.

That curiosity took her to University College Dublin for a Master’s in Biotherapeutics. 🇮🇪

But starting over wasn’t easy. Her Master’s cost around ₹24 lakh, with a ₹6 lakh university fee waiver, and she worked part-time in a grocery store, bookstore and as a pharmacy technician while building her new path.

Then came her first break in Ireland, a six-month contract with a biotech company working on a COVID-related instrument.

That experience became her entry into the Irish industry.

Today, Dr. Amala is a Team Lead at ICON in Dublin, building the career in clinical research she once didn’t even know existed. 🔬💼

She didn’t leave pharmacy behind. She found a different way to use it.
