We’re getting this question more and more lately:

“If my EV will eventually be able to power my home, should I just wait and skip the home battery?”

Fair question.

On paper, it sounds like a great idea. Your EV already has a big battery, so why pay for another one?

The catch is that Vehicle-to-Home tech still has a few moving parts. You need the right car, the right bidirectional charger, the right setup, and in some cases, there are still questions around approvals, warranties, and backup capability.

And there’s another side to it too.

If you wait a few years for V2H to become more common, you could be missing out on battery savings now, plus any rebates that are currently available.

That doesn’t mean V2H isn’t exciting. It absolutely is. I think it’ll become a really useful part of the home energy setup in the future.

But for most people, I wouldn’t make it the whole plan just yet.

The result? Amber performed extremely well when the battery was left in a basic self-powered setup.

But once the battery was actively configured around each tariff, the numbers changed dramatically — with one plan modelling at around $518 per year, compared with approximately $1,055 for Amber.

The biggest takeaway: the tariff you choose matters, but how your battery is configured can matter just as much.
