lIran’s Nuclear Stockpile at Risk Amid Internal Instability

David Albright, a former nuclear weapons inspector in Iraq and the founder of the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, has warned that if Iran descends into internal chaos, the government could lose its ability to secure its nuclear facilities.

According to Albright, Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile is the most serious concern. He cautioned that under unstable conditions, there is a real risk that some of this material could be stolen or fall into the wrong hands.

He pointed to historical precedent, noting that after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, large quantities of weapons-grade uranium and plutonium went missing due to weakened security and poor protection of nuclear assets.

So far, Iran has managed to maintain control over its nuclear sites, even after the United States carried out airstrikes during the 12-day war in June, which was initiated by Israel against the Islamic Republic.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran currently possesses 440.9 kilograms (972 pounds) of uranium enriched up to 60 percent purity. This level is considered a short technical step away from weapons-grade uranium, which requires about 90 percent enrichment—raising serious global security concerns.
