runtimestudios.etsy.com/ire Tavern owes its name to an autumn night when the forest appeared to catch fire.
Many years ago, a merchant arrived at the tavern shortly after sunset with a story nobody believed.
He claimed that while following the stream through the woods, he had seen dozens of tiny orange lights moving between the trees.
Not lanterns.
Not stars.
Little flames.
The regulars immediately informed him that he had either seen fireflies or enjoyed considerably too much cider before reaching the inn.
Then the keeper looked outside.
Along the opposite bank of the stream stood a red fox.
Behind it, scattered through the dark woods, tiny points of warm light flickered between the trees.
The fox watched the tavern for a moment before disappearing into the forest.
The lights followed.
By morning, the story had grown significantly less reasonable.
According to one version, the fox itself was glowing.
According to another, it had been leading a procession of forest spirits.
One man insisted it breathed fire.
Nobody invited that man back into the discussion.
But the name caught on.
Years later, when the old outdoor hearth needed rebuilding, the keeper asked a mason to shape it like the fox from the story.
The mason produced a stone creature curled protectively around the fire.
The keeper approved.
Mostly.
He did ask why it was roughly the size of a horse.
The mason replied:
โLegends grow.โ
Fair enough.
The fox hearth has guarded the clearing ever since.
And on certain autumn evenings, when the light fades and the forest becomes very still, guests still claim they see little orange lights moving beyond the stream.
Fireflies, probably.
Probably.
Welcome to The Foxfire Tavern.
The stream is running.
The leaves are falling.
And if something glowing moves through the woods tonight, finish your drink before investigating.
