The Eternal Return is a weekly live show where we take something you already know—a story, a phenomenon, an image we've all seen—and delve into it. Let's see what we find.
Each episode starts with something familiar. And from there, without a manual or a score, we go wherever we need to go.
This week's hook is the phrase we all repeat: "Politicians are a breed apart, they came from another world to ruin our lives." We hear it so much we don't even question it anymore. But it comes from a much older and more profound place than it seems.
We'll look for it in Hesiod, who three thousand years ago described an age where neither shame nor justice could stop anything. We'll explore Odysseus, forced to choose between two disasters with no clear way out, and we'll reach the end of his journey: two versions of what happens when violence has been unleashed, one from Homer and another recently filmed by Christopher Nolan, which don't end the same way. And before all that, another foundation: Romulus and Remus, the two brothers who must found a city without either having natural authority over the other—and only one lives to see it completed.
From this, we will draw, with Niccolò Machiavelli as the indispensable author of all classical political theory, what force is needed for a limit to truly exist—and what happens when that force withdraws and no one can make weapons fall on their own anymore.
And in the end, as always, this will give us back something that has nothing to do with politics or those who govern, but with those personal limits that also cannot sustain themselves, and that must be re-established each time, even if it hurts.
