runtimestudios.etsy.com/spering Quill Inn earned its name from a letter that was never meant to be read.
Many years ago, a traveling clerk stopped here after losing the road in a heavy evening fog.
He intended to stay only until morning.
Instead, the mist remained for three days.
With nowhere useful to go, the clerk took a table beside the window and began writing letters for the villagers.
Some were business matters.
Some were apologies.
A surprising number concerned money that somebody definitely intended to repay.
Late on the third night, after everyone else had gone to bed, the clerk began writing one final letter of his own.
Nobody knows who it was meant for.
He finished just before sunrise, folded the page, and left it beside the window while he packed his things.
When he returned, the letter was gone.
The window was still latched.
The door had never opened.
Only his quill remained, lying across the empty table.
The keeper searched everywhere.
Nothing.
Then, from somewhere outside, came the faint sound of paper moving in the wind.
He followed it down to the stream.
There, caught beneath the old stone bridge, was the missing letter.
Still folded.
Still sealed.
Completely dry.
The clerk stared at it for a long time.
Then he laughed, tucked the letter safely into his coat, and left without explaining a thing.
The quill stayed behind.
The keeper hung it above the hearth, and travelers began calling the place The Whispering Quill.
Ever since, writers have claimed that when the inn grows quiet enough, you can sometimes hear the scratching of a pen from an empty table.
The keeper has investigated this thoroughly.
His official conclusion:
โIf a ghost wants to finish the bookkeeping, Iโm not stopping it.โ
Welcome to The Whispering Quill Inn.
The mist is thick.
The stream is quiet.
And there is plenty of ink if inspiration happens to find you.
