This song is about Ned Kelly, an Australian bushranger. subscribe, share, like Ned Kelly was an infamous Australian bushranger who, along with his gang, robbed banks, held up towns, and killed three police officers in 1878. He is best known for his final 1880 showdown at Glenrowan, where the gang wore homemade suits of iron armour, and for the "Jerilderie Letter," which detailed his grievances against authorities. You can read a detailed timeline of his crimes and life via the State Library Victoria. Born in 1854 in Victoria, Kelly was drawn into a life of crime as a teenager and served prison time for horse theft. In 1878, after a dispute with police over his mother, he and his brother Dan, along with two associates, formed the "Kelly Gang". They were declared outlaws following the murders of the police officers and spent the next two years evading authorities. On the National Museum of Australia site, you can explore more about the history of the Kelly Gang and colonial bushranging. The gang's run ended during the Glenrowan Siege in June 1880. While the rest of the gang was killed in a shootout, Kelly—protected by his heavy, makeshift plate metal armour—was severely wounded and captured. He was subsequently tried and hanged in Melbourne in November 1880, leaving behind a highly debated legacy as both a cold-blooded criminal and a working-class folk hero who resisted a corrupt colonial establishment.
