Tim Curry was one of the most inspirational voices of our time. Not only was he an amazing voice actor, who I fondly remember immediately gravitating towards whenever I heard him speak - including in cartoon shows like the beloved Gargoyles and The Wild Thornberrys - he was also an accomplished film and television and theatre actor as well. My favourite performance of his still comes from one of my all time favourite films, Clue, which I think to this day is greatly underappreciated. Not only is it an amazing film on its own but it managed to turn the board game Clue, originally known as Cluedo, into an actual murder mystery film that is well written. Tim Curry shines in his performance as the Butler Wadsworth and delivers a performance that has made me cry-laugh on multiple rewatches.
Tim Curry is also one of the actors who made me fall in love with musicals. Rocky Horror Picture Show was one of the first musicals I watched in film form. And I would spend hours watching the movie on a loop, singing along with friends to the lyrics, and acting out scenes. Rocky Horror was also one of the first stage shows I performed in and a big part of my love for that musical comes from Tim Curry's performance as the surprisingly sympathetic villain, Dr Frankenfurter.
Tim Curry was an unparalleled talent whose versatility knew no bounds. All I can hope is that his performances will continue to inspire actors today to take big risks and let their freak flags fly, as Curry did many a time in his own life.
