Losing Weight? How to Protect Your Bones #shorts GLP-1 medications are now among the fastest-growing prescriptions in the world and it's important to visit the bone side of the conversation. Rapid weight loss of any kind can affect the skeleton. When body weight drops quickly, the everyday load that keeps bone dense drops with it, and lean muscle is often lost along with fat. Muscle and bone tend to come off together, and the pull of muscle on bone is one of the signals that keeps bone strong. The research is early and still evolving: A randomized trial of semaglutide found lower hip bone density after one year compared with placebo. A large database study presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons linked five years of GLP-1 use with a higher risk of osteoporosis in adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity. Other data are mixed, cause and effect has not been proven, and we have no long-term data on people over 65 who stay on these drugs for a decade. Why it matters: a hip fracture after 65 can change a life, and bone lost later in life does not rebuild easily. If you are losing weight on a GLP-1 (just a reminder): Eat enough protein to protect muscle. Get adequate calcium and vitamin D, and ask your doctor whether testing or supplements make sense for you. Make resistance training a habit, two to three times a week. Ask whether a bone density (DEXA) scan is right for you, especially after menopause or after 65.
