She achieved the conversion of her husband and her son Augustine. She was born in 331 in Thagaste (present-day Algeria), in North Africa. She was married to Patricius, a pagan Roman official who was ambitious, violent, unfaithful, and quick-tempered. She endured his abuses with meekness, prayer, and silence, until she finally succeeded in converting her husband to Christianity and baptizing him shortly before his death. She had three children. She was widowed at the age of 39 and devoted herself with boundless love to her children. At 17, while studying in Carthage, Augustine led a dissolute life, straying from the Catholic faith and immersing himself in various philosophies contrary to it. At the age of 19, Augustine took a wife and they had a son, Adeodatus. Monica prayed and wept for Augustine's conversion for over three decades. The Bishop told her, "Go in peace; it is impossible that the son of so many tears should be lost." Finally, her prayer was answered. Augustine was baptized at the age of 32 in Milan in the year 387 by Bishop Ambrose. Monica decided to return to Africa. During the voyage, she suddenly fell ill with a fever in the Italian port of Ostia, where she died at the age of 56. Before dying, she asked that she always be remembered at the altar of the Lord, no matter where her body rested.
