The great saint Adi Shankaracharya sang Kanakadhara Stotram for the welfare of human beings suffering from past karma and poverty.
Kanakadhara Stotram is a powerful Sanskrit hymn dedicated to Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of wealth (material and spiritual).
Shankaracharya composed the Stotram in praise of Goddess Lakshmi and requested her to shower wealth on a poor lady who offered him an Amla fruit as bhiksha.
The Goddess initially refused, as the lady had not done any charity in her past life.
But as his hymn pleased her immensely, she blessed the poor lady with a shower of gold.
‘Kanaka’ means ‘gold’, and ‘Dhara’ means ‘stream or flow’.
