‪@lovemedics‬ Tubectomy • The sterilisation procedure in females is called tubectomy • Tubectomy is a permanent female contraceptive method • Surgical cutting & blocking of both fallopian tubes to prevent the sperm & ovum from meeting Normal pathway After ovulation, the ovum enters the fallopian tube. Normally, fertilization occurs in the ampulla of the fallopian tube. If sperm meets the ovum → fertilization can occur ovary - fallopian tube - uterus - cervix - vagina In tubectomy The fallopian tubes are cut & occluded/blocked. So, Sperm cannot reach the ovum Ovum cannot travel normally through the blocked tube to meet sperm Therefore, fertilization is prevented. What happens to the ovum? The ovaries continue to ovulate. The ovum is released normally, but because the fallopian tube is blocked, it cannot meet sperm. The ovum eventually degenerates and is reabsorbed. Does tubectomy stop menstruation? No. Tubectomy does not stop: Ovulation Ovarian hormone production Menstruation Types of tubectomy 1. Laparoscopic tubal sterilization Small abdominal incisions are made. A laparoscope is inserted. The fallopian tubes are occluded, commonly using clips, rings, or cautery. 2. Mini-laparotomy A small abdominal incision is made. (usually suprapubic) The fallopian tubes are identified & occluded. 3. Postpartum tubectomy Can be performed after childbirth (usually within 24 – 48 hours after vaginal delivery), usually through a small incision. #tubectomy #reproductivehealth #reproduction #contraceptives #female #physiology
