Cooney Square sits directly across from the Cherry Valley American Legion in Leicester, Massachusetts.
This aerial view captures one of Leicester’s 19 Gold Star Squares — memorials located throughout Leicester, Cherry Valley and Rochdale honoring local servicemen who lost their lives while serving our country.
The Cherry Valley American Legion Post 443 has played an important role in preserving this history and supporting the Leicester Gold Star Project, including the work to restore the memorial squares and connect them with the stories of the men they honor.
Projects like this are at the heart of Soldiers, Scouts, Students: veterans, young people and community members working together to preserve local history and carry it forward.
History doesn't only live in museums. Sometimes it's sitting at an intersection we drive through every day.
