Before becoming the cult classic directed by Russell Mulcahy, starring our very own Lambert, Highlander was a project developed during his student days by screenwriter Gregory Widen, future author of Backdraft—and himself from a family of firefighters.
Upon graduating, Widen sold his screenplay for $300,000. But the Highlander he envisioned was very different from the film we know: darker, sometimes surprising, and incredibly rich in ideas.
With my colleague from @videoclub58, we'll be revisiting this original screenplay, before the rewrites by Peter Bellwood and Larry Ferguson.
⚔️ We'll also be discussing the numerous scripts and projects surrounding Highlander II, and then a Highlander III that could have been very different, particularly through Brad Mirman's original screenplay, which I find far more successful than the final film.
Scripts, rewrites, abandoned ideas… and ultimately, Highlander movies we never saw.
