“You may have caged the lion, but his cubs are running loose.” — Marcus Mosiah Garvey❤️🖤💚 August 17, 1887 — 139 years ago today, the Rt. Hon. Marcus Mosiah Garvey was born in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica and would go on to build the largest organized mass movement of Black people in modern history. Through the UNIA, Garvey organized millions throughout the African Diaspora around African liberation, self-determination, economic independence & the redemption of Africa. His movement established businesses, factories, newspapers, international conventions & the Black Star Line — connecting African people globally at a scale never seen before. For this work, Garvey was heavily targeted. J. Edgar Hoover’s Bureau of Investigation — precursor to the FBI — infiltrated his movement, while other forces conspired against him, including Black leaders involved in the “Garvey Must Go” campaign. Garvey was eventually imprisoned & deported, but his ideas could not be contained. His influence can be felt throughout Black liberation movements worldwide. Malcolm X was literally raised in the Garvey movement: his parents Earl & Louise Little were active Garveyites and UNIA organizers. Garvey’s legacy also runs deeply through Reggae music & Rastafari movement. Fittingly one of his greatest musical advocates, the legendary Burning Spear, comes from St. Ann, Jamaica just like Garvey. For decades Spear has carried Garvey’s name & teachings throughout the world through Reggae music. 139 years later, the message & mission could not be caged. “Look for me in the whirlwind..” Happy 139th Earthstrong Marcus Mosiah Garvey! 🇯🇲❤️🖤💚 #MarcusGarvey #BlackAugust #UNIA #BurningSpear #IansaMagazine
