You ate a banana. But where does it go after you swallow it? 🍌
Your body doesn’t process a banana as one thing.
Digestion begins in your mouth, continues through your stomach, and moves into the small intestine, where much of its digestible carbohydrate is broken down and absorbed.
But that’s only part of the journey.
Potassium can be absorbed and used in normal nerve and muscle function, while much of the fiber continues into the large intestine, where gut microbes can ferment some of it and produce short-chain fatty acids.
And as a banana ripens, some of its starch is converted into simpler sugars, changing its texture and sweetness.
One banana. Several biological pathways.
