Why can Norwegian use expressions such as på telefon and i telefonen around what may appear to be the same situation?
Because a preposition is not simply a word that must correspond to one preposition in another language.
It helps construct a particular relationship and perspective on the situation.
That is why learning Norwegian through direct word-for-word substitution eventually stops working.
