"Will I be able to hunt and fish again after a knee replacement?" A study now in press in The Journal of Arthroplasty surveyed 513 patients who underwent total #kneereplacement at a rural Appalachian academic center (2019-2024) - first study dedicated to return to hunting and fishing after knee replacement. The findings are encouraging. Among patients who hunted in the 5-yrs before surgery, 75% returned to hunting, at a mean of 6.4 mos. Among those who fished, 76% returned, at a mean of 5.9 mos. Most returned at the same or greater capacity than before surgery, and roughly 2/3 said their knee replacement made these activities easier. 93% of both groups would recommend the procedure to a fellow hunter or angler sidelined by knee pain. These numbers line up with what we see for golf, cycling, and skiing. Tree stands, uneven terrain, wading, and long days on foot are moderately demanding, but they do not appear to delay recovery beyond the typical timeline. Two caveats. About a third of patients reported participating at a lower level than before surgery, which is why preoperative counseling matters. And this was a survey with a 14.9% response rate, so results likely skew toward the more satisfied, active patients. If knee pain is keeping you out of the field or off the water, the evidence supports a strong chance of getting back, often within a single season. Tell your surgeon what you want to return to. That goal shapes your rehab. SHARE your return to the #outdoors after #jointreplacement Source: Lowden B, Burbelo A, Stone W, et al.
