When a woman faces harassment or violence, the response often turns toward restricting other women: come home early, avoid certain roads, don’t go out alone, and follow stricter hostel timings. But does that actually make a city safer, or does it simply shift the burden of an unsafe environment onto women?
The bigger question is what we mean by women’s safety. A truly safe city should allow women to study, work, meet friends, travel and simply walk around without having to justify why they are outside. Street lighting, reliable policing and action on complaints are part of creating that environment.
Women should not have to give up their freedom because public spaces are unsafe. If a street is dangerous, the answer should be to make the street safer, not to take away women’s right to be there.
