Whenever a show like Bobs Burgers, or The Simpsons, or The Wild Thornberries gets the opportunity to be on the big screen, it feels like the creators suddenly feel the need to prove themselves. As if the success of having a cartoon so popular on TV that it warrants a theatrical distribution isn’t a feat within itself. So they always add shadows and 3D to make it feel more expensive. But I’ve always felt like that isn’t necessary. And then there’s things like the new Bluey movie coming out that is choosing to do a 3D style rather than its famous flat 2D style. In general, I miss any form of 2D animation in theaters, but also this one feels like it should hone the iconic style it uses uncontested. No one else dares to use the bluey style because they know they’d never animate it as well. It also pulls a lot from its source material with Australian colors that are visible to dogs. It’s beautifully thought out. To which, I trust the team to think out the 3D version as well, but I wish the looming idea of a movie didn’t make every creator has a self existential panic.
