3D Printed Bone Saved This Leg: Metamaterial Implants #shorts Surgeons in Madrid are changing how we think about bone reconstruction. A 38-year-old man had a high-grade #sarcoma in his tibia. After infection and severe bone loss, his options were amputation or an implant that would sacrifice the entire knee. No device on the market could save both the limb and the joint, so the hospital built one. Using aerospace-derived engineering, the team designed and 3D printed a patient-specific titanium implant built as a metamaterial. In a metamaterial, mechanical behavior comes from geometry rather than composition. Millimeter-scale titanium rods were arranged to recreate the shape and the function of the missing bone. . The design began with a digital twin of his healthy leg, built from radiologic imaging and loaded in simulation for walking, stair climbing, and stumbling. The internal lattice was then tuned point by point so force routes to bone that could still accept it, and fixation screws were aimed at the strongest remaining regions. Reported specifications: roughly 300 grams, with simulated load tolerance above 500 kilograms. The lattice was packed with cancellous graft so bone could grow through the metal. . Nearly a year later, there has been no infection and no implant-related complication. Knee alignment and motion are preserved, and he walks, often without crutches. In compromised bone, fixation and stress shielding are challenging problems. Designing an implant for load transfer, not just for shape, addresses both.
