The most extensive and comprehensive genetic monitoring effort ever conducted to estimate the population size of the Marsican brown bear (Ursus arctos marsicanus), one of the most threatened bear populations in the world, has been completed.
The study, promoted by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and coordinated by ISPRA, was conducted as part of the
#pnrr DigitAP project.
The modeling analysis, based on genetic data collected in the summer of 2025, estimated a
total population of 81 individuals (43 females and 38 males), with an uncertainty range of 73 to 88 individuals. The estimate refers to a total area of approximately 6,500 km2, extending from the Province of Rieti in the north to the provinces of Frosinone and Isernia in the south.
