You made it to 9 AM. But how much did it take to get here?
You may already be working, answering messages and getting things done. But functioning and feeling well aren’t necessarily the same thing.
So notice something this morning:
How much effort did your normal morning require?
Easy? Noticeable? Much harder than it should have been?
One difficult morning doesn’t tell you much. But if ordinary mornings regularly require extraordinary effort, that pattern is worth paying attention to.
Getting through the morning is an outcome. How much it costs you is information too.
If you’re already running on empty by 3:30 but your day still has hours to go, don’t automatically push through. Check what you actually need, respond to it, then notice what helps. Repeated patterns can tell you a lot more than “I’m just tired.” #Perimenopause#MidlifeHealth#HealthyAging#yyc#MensHealth
Your child’s protein plan probably got more scrutiny this month than your aching shoulder ever has.
I’m building a nutrition and training plan for a 15-year-old hockey player.
His mom is in perimenopause.
And there’s an interesting parallel.
For him, we’re focused on enough calories, carbohydrates, protein, resistance training and recovery to support growth and performance.
For Mom, some of those same fundamentals matter for a very different reason.
More than 70% of women are estimated to experience musculoskeletal symptoms during the menopause transition. Researchers now refer to this collection of changes as the musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause.
Joint pain. Stiffness. Muscle loss. Bone loss. Even conditions such as frozen shoulder can become part of the picture.
So two takeaways:
For your young athlete: Before simply adding more protein, make sure they’re eating enough total food and carbohydrates to support training and growth.
For you: Prioritize resistance training and adequate protein. And if a joint or shoulder has quietly become painful or stiff, don’t automatically dismiss it as aging.
We’re very good at taking changes in our kids’ bodies seriously.

A free hour shows up on Saturday. What’s your first thought: “What else can I get done?” or “What would I actually like to do?”
Not every free hour needs to become a productive hour.

It’s Friday night. Do you still have anything left?
If your weekends keep becoming recovery time, don’t just write it off as getting older or “just perimenopause.”
Ask: What keeps taking so much out of me during the week?

You made it into the day. But pay attention to what it took to get there.
If you woke up tired, stiff or just not feeling like yourself, check again around 9 AM.
Did eating change your energy? Did moving change your pain or stiffness? Did coffee change your focus? Or are you still pushing through?
Try comparing your energy, focus and pain/stiffness when you wake up with how you feel a few hours later.
Then ask: What changed?
One morning won’t tell you why. But repeated patterns can give you much better questions to ask.
The goal isn’t to get better at pushing through. It’s to understand what keeps making you need to.

You were in bed for 7–8 hours. So why don’t you feel restored?
Tomorrow morning, note:
• What interrupted your sleep?
• Rested 1–10?
• Any pain/stiffness, and does movement change it?
Don’t diagnose it. Look for the pattern.
“I’m tired” is a feeling. The pattern gives you a better question.

Before lunch, ask: How do I want to feel at 3 p.m.?
Then check for some protein, fibre and water. No judgment. Just notice what happens to your energy later.
