Every ship of the age of sail was an answer to an engineering problem. How do you make oak stop a 24-pound iron ball? How do you fire forty tons of artillery from a moving platform without tearing the hull apart? How do you keep seven hundred men alive on a wooden box for six months at sea?

This channel answers those questions one vessel and one system at a time.

Each video takes a single subject - a frigate, a carronade, a powder magazine - and breaks down how it was designed, why it was built that way, what it cost in money and lives, and what replaced it. Expect real detail: timber and framing, rigging loads, gunnery drill, powder handling, navigation, provisioning, medicine and discipline. The period runs from 1500 to 1860, from the first gunports cut into carrack hulls to the last wooden ships of the line. No background knowledge assumed.
