ThaLandz.com launched in 1996 as one of the internet’s first online Audio Vaults dedicated to Underground Hip-Hop, Acid Jazz, Rare Grooves, Downtempo & Left-Field Frequencies. Founded by California-based DJ, MC, Producer & Music Archivist Dru Ali aka Hyphen Select, the site began as a passion project made possible by rare access to server space and the emerging RealAudio technology. At a time when streaming full albums online was unheard of, Tha Landz introduced listeners worldwide to a new frontier of underground music discovery.
Built with hand-coded HTML, Tha Landz quickly became a global hub for underground music enthusiasts, connecting independent artists, listeners and scenes across the world long before social media. Among its pioneering features was The Dungeon, one of the earliest known RealAudio MC battle platforms, where artists submitted recordings and helped shape the evolution of online battle culture.
