**Stronger for the Second Half.**

I'm Kyle Battis. I'm approaching 50 and documenting my journey to become stronger, healthier and more capable for the decades ahead.

My background is in Athletic Training and Exercise Science. I worked as a Certified Athletic Trainer and earned the NSCA-CSCS and NSCA-CPT before eventually changing careers.

After injuries and years of inconsistent training, my weight reached 310 pounds. I decided to change that.

I've since lost about 85 pounds, rebuilt my strength, added muscle and made training a non-negotiable part of my life.

Here I'll share my workouts, nutrition, fat loss, muscle building, mobility, recovery, longevity, home gym, setbacks and lessons I've learned along the way.

Fitness shouldn't consume your life. It should make your life better.

**The goal isn't to turn back the clock. It's to get Stronger for the Second Half.**

Strength training is the meat and potatoes. Cardio is the seasoning.

That’s how I’m approaching my current fat loss phase at 49.

Lifting stays at the center of my training. For cardio, I started small and gradually added a session or a little more time when my fat loss progress slowed.

My goal is to keep moving toward a leaner physique while maintaining muscle, strength, and enough energy to recover well.

In my new Short, β€œHow I Approach Cardio at 49 for Fat Loss,” I share the thinking behind that approach.

How do you approach cardio when you’re trying to lose fat?

**Thinking About Building a Basement Home Gym? Here Are 3 Things to Consider FIRST!**

I recently finished transforming part of my basement into a fully functional home gym, and I've learned quite a bit throughout the process.

If you're considering building your own home gym, there are three things I think you should consider BEFORE you start spending money or buying equipment.

In my newest YouTube video, I break down:

**1. Your Goals Should Dictate Your Gym Design** – What are you training for? Your goals should determine the equipment you buy, how you organize your space, and what you prioritize.

**2. Establish a Realistic Budget** – Home gyms can get expensive quickly! I'll share why it's important to plan your spending and prioritize what matters most.

**3. Don't Overlook Soundproofing** – This is especially important for a basement gym! I talk about why I prioritized sound reduction during my build and some of the decisions I made along the way.

One of the things I've come to appreciate is that **you don't need a massive space or every piece of equipment imaginable to build a great home gym. You just need a space that's designed around YOUR goals.**

**NEW VIDEO: 3 Things to Consider BEFORE Building a Basement Home Gym**

I'm continuing to share my home gym projects, workouts, and fitness journey as I approach 50 on my **Stronger for the Second Half** YouTube channel.

**QUESTION:** If you were building your own home gym, what would be your biggest concern β€” budget, available space, equipment selection, or noise?

**Can you lose body fat, maintain muscle, and stay strong WITHOUT spending hours in the gym?**

That's exactly what I'm experimenting with at 49.

I've recently switched to a minimalist training program built around shorter, more frequent workouts, with most sessions focusing on just 2–3 exercises.

**Why the change?**

I'm currently in a purposeful calorie deficit, and my goals are pretty straightforward:

πŸ’ͺ Lose body fat
πŸ’ͺ Maintain muscle and strength
πŸ’ͺ Manage fatigue and recovery
πŸ’ͺ Keep my joints healthy and moving well
πŸ’ͺ Stay consistent without beating myself up

Instead of seeing how much training I can squeeze into a workout, I'm exploring how little I actually need to get the results I'm after.

In my newest YouTube video, **MY MINIMALIST FAT LOSS TRAINING PROGRAM AT 49**, I break down my entire 7-day training split, explain the thinking behind it, and share how I'm approaching strength training while trying to get leaner.

I also link to videos showing the actual workouts so you can see exactly what I'm doing.

My goal isn't just to get leaner at 49. It's to stay strong, mobile, and capable for the second half of my life.

**Have you ever experimented with shorter, more frequent workouts?** I'd love to hear your experience!

Another **low-volume workout at 49** is up!

I'm continuing to experiment with minimalist training β€” fewer exercises, focused effort, and enough volume to keep building and maintaining strength and muscle without spending forever in the gym.

Today's session:

**Deadlifts β€” 5Γ—5**
**EZ-Bar Biceps Curls β€” 3Γ—12**
**Leaning Cable Lateral Raises β€” 3Γ—12**

I supersetted the curls and lateral raises after the deadlifts to keep the workout efficient.

As I get closer to 50, I'm becoming increasingly interested in the idea of finding the **minimum effective dose** of training β€” doing enough to make progress while leaving enough recovery capacity to stay healthy, consistent and excited to train.

**Training at 49 - Deadlifts + Biceps & Shoulders**

Do you prefer shorter, focused workoutsβ€”or higher-volume training sessions?

NEW VIDEO: My Basement Home Gym Transformation!

This one has been a long time coming.

I took an unfinished section of my basement and transformed it into a fully equipped home gym β€” and in my newest video, I’m showing the entire process from BEFORE ➑️ AFTER.

I walk through where I started, the decisions I made along the way, the equipment I chose, and give you a full tour of how everything turned out.

At 49, having a convenient place to train at home has become increasingly important to me. The goal wasn't to cram in as much equipment as possible β€” it was to create a space where I can get stronger, build muscle, stay healthy, and keep training for decades to come.

I'm really happy with how it came together.

What if you could have a productive workout with just **2 exercises?**

After finishing my last training program, I was feeling a little burned out and ready for a change.

So I went in the opposite direction.

I'm currently experimenting with **minimalist training** β€” a dynamic warm-up, some mobility/PT work, and then just **TWO main exercises per workout**.

That's it.

Some of these workouts can be finished in just 20–30 minutes, and at 49, I'm finding that simplifying my training has actually made me more excited to get into the gym.

I just posted a new video explaining exactly what I'm doing, why I made the switch, and why I think this style of training could make a lot of sense for those of us approaching 50 and beyond.
