INDIA: Christian Fellowship Impacted by Restrictive Laws

When churches are restricted, believers are finding another way to gather.

Across western India, restrictive laws, surveillance and opposition are making Christian fellowship increasingly difficult.

Some churches meet early in the morning. Pastors visit believers in their homes. Others have moved services online. Some change meeting times and notify members at the last minute.

One congregation of 300 has been partially closed, while another has stopped meeting altogether after radicals restricted who could enter.

Yet pastors and believers continue to adapt, worship and encourage one another.

IRAN: New Restrictions on Christian Media Channels

For many Iranian Christians who cannot safely gather for worship, satellite TV and online Christian media provide vital biblical teaching, worship and encouragement.

Now, accessing those resources has become even more dangerous.

Iran has classified numerous Christian broadcasters and ministries as “hostile”, meaning believers who watch their programmes or cooperate with them could face prosecution under espionage laws. At least five Christians had already been charged when this report was compiled.

Yet Iranian believers remain determined to follow Christ.

RUSSIA: Korean Missionary Faces Up to 17 Years as Trial Resumes

After more than 30 years of ministry in Russia, Korean missionary Park Tae Yeon, nearly 70, remains in detention as her trial resumes this week.

Ms Park was arrested on 15 January, just one week before she was due to return to Korea and retire.

She faces three immigration-related charges concerning assistance she allegedly provided to Koreans entering Russia. Together, the charges carry a maximum possible sentence of 17 years.

While the case concerns immigration allegations, Voice of the Martyrs Korea has expressed concern that religious motives may be involved amid increasing restrictions on evangelical Protestant ministry.

A verdict is expected on 24 September.

NIGERIA: Governor Acts Against Unauthorised Religious Enforcement

In an encouraging development, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has ordered security agencies to stop an unauthorised group reportedly intimidating residents and attempting to enforce Islamic rules in parts of Jos.

The Governor declared the activities “illegal, unauthorised and unacceptable”, affirming that every resident has the right to worship and live without intimidation from self-appointed authorities.

CHINA: Imprisoned Pastor’s Health Declining

The family of imprisoned house church pastor Sun Chenghao is deeply concerned after learning that the 44-year-old pastor recently lost consciousness in prison.

Pastor Sun is serving a four-and-a-half-year sentence after travelling legally to South Korea with other Christians for Christian exchange activities. His family and lawyers maintain that no crime was committed.

Despite the hardship, Sun’s wife has encouraged him to remain hopeful in the Lord.

ALGERIA: Prison Sentences Against 10 Christians Dropped

An answer to prayer!

Ten Algerian Christians who were facing the possibility of significant prison sentences have had their cases dismissed.

As they waited at home – barred from entering the court – they received the news they had been praying for. While each believer must still pay a significant fine, they will not face prison in these cases.

“Thank the Lord, our God, for answering our prayers,” a front-line worker said.

HAITI: Christians Targeted in Massacre, 47 Killed

At least 47 people were killed in a major gang attack in Haiti’s Kenscoff commune, including five children. More than 50 others were kidnapped.

The attackers targeted a church compound where displaced families had sought refuge. According to the UN, 22 people were reportedly executed inside the church grounds.

Yet Haitian believers continue serving their communities and pointing people to Christ.

OCCUPIED UKRAINE: Pastor Appeals Deportation Order

Pastor Vladimir Rytikov, 67, was born in Krasnodon and has lived there his entire life. Now, Russian occupation authorities are seeking to deport him.

For years, Pastor Vladimir has faced fines and court hearings for leading an unregistered Baptist church. When authorities raided his church in January, he prayed for them and then spoke to them about Christ.

Pray that Pastor Vladimir and his wife, Lyudmila, will be strengthened as they wait. Pray for justice at his appeal and that his Christlike witness will touch the hearts of those deciding his future.
