What can Okinawan Karate teach us about the body—and even about peace? 🥋
The other day, I tried Hara Flow, an exercise method based on Okinawan Karate.
What surprised me was how much it had in common with the Jin-ki training (Peng Jin) I practice in Kung Fu.
Both aim for a body with:
🌬️ the elastic tension of a balloon
🫧 the whole body working as one
But the approaches are different, which made the experience really fascinating.
One experiment especially stayed with me.
I simply thought:
“You can do it. You’ve got this.”
And somehow, the other person’s body became more integrated and connected.
That made me think…
If we are constantly criticized or made to feel unsafe, does the body become fragmented?
And if someone around us genuinely believes in us, can the body begin to organize itself?
Maybe this is why the environment we choose matters so much.
A child who grows up hearing “You can’t do it” over and over may learn to disconnect from their own body.
But even having one person who believes in you can make a difference.
What if more of us approached others with:
“You’re okay. You can do this.”
Would that change not only our bodies, but our world?
Another thing I noticed:
The more I tried to “make it happen,” the harder it became.
When movement worked, there was almost no feeling of “I did it!”
It was more like:
“Wait… that’s all I had to do?”
I think this applies to so many things in life.
We often become better by doing less, not more.
I also finally understood something about the Sanchin stance that had confused me for a long time.
Once I understood the key point—apparently, the elbows—the whole thing suddenly made sense.
