Gate City Soul is a documentary film that looks at the soul music scene in Greensboro North Carolina during the 1960's and 1970s.
Greensboro was an important hub on the chitin circuit, hosting the likes of Otis Redding, Solomon Burke and James Brown. The local music community aspired to emulate and hook up with these national music forces of nature and created their own community to support these passers thru and create a training ground for local musical upstarts.
Like any good story there is struggle and triumph. This is a story of business dealing (learning), broken family and unrealized dreams as well as excitement and optimism about a future that seemed uncertain.
The film follows musicians Roy Roberts, Vic Hudson and George D Bishop III, producers Jimmy Cheek, Walter Grady and Wayman “Slack” Johnson, and many more.
