This channel is an educational resource exploring persistent chronic symptoms and the relationship between mind, body and nervous system. Our work draws on neuroscience, Jungian depth psychology, Somatic Experiencing, embodiment and emotional awareness. We explore the mind component of embodied experience, including how thought, attention, perception, emotion and past experience may influence how we understand and relate to sensations. Rather than approaching the nervous system as something to fix or control, we explore awareness, embodiment and allowing as ways of meeting inner experience with curiosity and less resistance.

We cannot simply instruct the nervous system into a new way of being. Telling ourselves that we are safe, trying to think differently or deliberately controlling the body does not necessarily change the deeper prediction underneath.

When an old prediction produces a sensation and we immediately interfere with it, suppress it, escape it or try to make it disappear, our response can reinforce the very prediction we are trying to change.

Allowing creates a different experience. The sensation can arise without the expected reaction following it. What was predicted does not happen in quite the same way, creating an opportunity for the brain to update what it expects.

We are not directly changing the nervous system. We are changing the conditions under which new learning can occur.

This is why allowing is not passive. It is the absence of unnecessary interference that gives the system the opportunity to discover something new.

Wall gazing is a simple Zen practice that can support Allowing, shadow integration and contact with the Self. By sitting quietly in front of a blank wall with our eyes softly open, we give the ego less external material to pursue. We are not trying to go inward. We are simply stopping continually going outward. As distraction falls away, memories, emotions, sensations, images, boredom or restlessness may naturally present themselves. We do not analyse, fix or manufacture anything. We Allow. The ego does not choose what needs integrating. The Self presents what is available. The wall becomes a mirror, creating space for old patterns to meet new experience and for natural healing, regulation and integration to unfold. Face the wall and let the shadow find you.

The nervous system is constantly moving through processes that do not always look or feel comfortable.

Activation, emotion, sensation, tiredness, shaking, tears, stillness or the need to withdraw can arise as part of what is already unfolding. The difficulty comes when we repeatedly interrupt that movement because we decide it should not be happening.

We suppress it, distract from it, analyse it, try to calm it down or rush towards a different state. In doing so, we may never give what has arisen the opportunity to move through its natural course.

Allowing is not about making completion happen. It is about creating the conditions in which we stop interrupting what is already trying to complete.

Sometimes the work is simply to let the process finish.

“Teach your nervous system safety” may be one of the biggest category errors in the mind body world. Feeling unsafe is not being unsafe. Yet when fear or activation appears, we are taught to calm, regulate, reassure, tap, visualise or “signal safety.” What does that implicitly demonstrate? That the feeling required intervention. The conscious mind says safe while our behaviour says danger. Predictive processing points elsewhere: old maps update when predictions meet contradictory lived experience. The fear comes, we allow it, and the predicted catastrophe does not happen. That is new evidence. Stop equating calmness with regulation. Stop misusing polyvagal theory and turning it into another control strategy. You do not teach your nervous system safety. You stop teaching it that its own experience is dangerous. And that naturally retrains and updates the nervous system’s implicit maps.

The schedule is not there to control or regulate the nervous system. It is a gentle structure that creates predictability, reduces the constant need to make decisions and gives us regular places to return to throughout the day.

Rather than continually asking whether we should be resting, moving, doing more or doing less, the day is already held within a simple, repeatable rhythm. This can take some of the pressure away from the thinking mind and create more room to be present with what is already here.

The schedule also helps us remember to allow. We pause, come back into the body and meet what is arising without trying to fix it, suppress it or force it somewhere else.

It is not about making the nervous system do anything. It is about creating a steady structure within which we can stop interfering quite so much and allow what is already here.

The Allowing Mantra is a simple tool for returning to what is here. Allow is not an affirmation. It does not ask you to convince yourself that you are safe, healing or getting better. Instead, it gives the busy ego one simple instruction. Allow. When the mind disappears into the past, future, checking, judging, analysing, solving or resisting, allow gently brings attention back to present experience. Again and again, we stop reinforcing old maps and give the brain new information through what is actually happening now. This is true brain retraining. We are teaching the ego to stop interfering with the body’s natural processes of regulation, integration and healing. The mantra is not the destination. Eventually even allow becomes unnecessary. We discover the awareness beneath the commentary, becoming coherent and returning to our natural state.
