The ACL Buckle You See Is Not the Injury, It's the Aftermath

Most
#ACLtears happen with nobody touching the athlete. Research that analyzed real injury videos suggests that buckle is not the injury itself. It is the aftermath.
Your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a short, strong rope inside the knee that ties your shin bone (tibia) to your thigh bone (femur). It keeps the shin from sliding forward and helps control rotation. When the knee is bent, the rope has some slack. As the knee straightens, that slack disappears and the ligament is pulled tight.
The classic non-contact injury happens in a split second:
An athlete lands with the knee almost straight, or plants a foot and cuts.
The shin slides forward under the thigh bone.
The knee caves inward, what surgeons call valgus collapse.
The leg twists while the foot stays planted on the ground.
Because the rope is already tight, there is nowhere left to go. The ligament fails, often with a pop the athlete feels or hears, and then the knee gives way. Much of what we see on the replay happens after the ligament has already torn.
Positions that load the ACL can be trained. Prevention programs teach athletes to land and cut with the hips and knees bent and to keep the knee from collapsing inward, plus hip and hamstring strength work. For colleagues: video analysis points to valgus and internal rotation at initial contact, so technique coaching belongs in every prevention program.
