What Is the Zabur in the Quran? A Linguistic and Critical Study of Zabur | Inside Islam Live: Dr. Dahir Majaz and Mazhab e Ibrahim | Zabur (Zaboor) in the Quran — What Does “Zabur” Really Mean? قرآن کا زبور کیا ہے؟ زبور اور زُبُر کا تحقیقی و لسانی مطالعہ The Qur’an contains both the word Zabur (زَبُور) and the word Zubur (زُبُر). What do these two words mean? Are they used exclusively to refer to a particular scripture, or can they have broader meanings relating to writings, books, or written records? According to Islamic belief, the Zabur is the scripture given to Prophet David (Dawud). However, the different occurrences of Zabur and Zubur in the Qur’an raise several important linguistic, textual, historical, and theological questions. In this livestream, we will explore the following questions: • What does the word Zabur mean in the Qur’an? • What is the meaning of Zubur, and in what contexts does the Qur’an use it? • Is Zabur the proper name of a specific scripture, or does the word have a broader meaning? • Does the Zabur mentioned in the Qur’an refer to the Psalms of David? • If Zabur is the name of the scripture given to Prophet David, how should we understand the plural form Zubur and its various Qur’anic usages? • What meanings do Arabic dictionaries assign to the root Z-B-R (ز ب ر) and its derivatives? • How have Muslim exegetes and scholars interpreted these words? To investigate these questions, we will examine the occurrences of Zabur, Zubur, and their derivatives throughout the Qur’an, paying close attention to their linguistic meanings and textual contexts. We will also consult classical Arabic dictionaries, Qur’anic commentaries, and the interpretations offered by Muslim scholars. Our aim is to distinguish between the lexical meanings of these words, their usage in the Qur’anic text, and their religious and theological interpretations. The objective is not to defend or reject a preconceived conclusion, but to investigate the questions through the Qur’anic text, the Arabic language, and relevant scholarly sources. Join us for an academic exploration of Zabur and Zubur in the Qur’an as we examine their meanings, usages, and interpretations.
