How Did Bone Nails Become a Thing? The surgeon who changed fracture repair in 1939.

Gerhard Küntscher drove a metal rod down the center of a broken femur and told the patient to walk. At a time when a broken thigh bone meant weeks in traction, this looked reckless. It worked. The technique spread when WWII prisoners of war returned home with nails in their femurs, and today's titanium nails still follow his original design.

Most people assume it is decorative. It is actually a code. Gold means tungsten carbide working surfaces, one of the hardest alloys in surgical instrumentation. Sharper edges, better needle grip, and a much longer service life than standard stainless steel.

Black handles signal a different blade design entirely.

A 300-Gram Titanium Bone That Holds 500 Kilograms - New video

A 38-year-old man with a high-grade sarcoma in his tibia had two options: amputation or an implant that would sacrifice his knee. A hospital team in Madrid built a third option, a patient-specific titanium implant designed as a metamaterial, where millimeter-scale rods are arranged so the structure carries load the way bone does.

The design started with a digital twin of his healthy leg, simulated under walking, stairs, and stumbling. Fixation screws were aimed at the strongest remaining bone, and the lattice was packed with cancellous graft so bone could grow through it.

Nearly a year later: no infection, no implant-related complication, knee preserved, and walking often without crutches.

Shower the day you get home, yes. Soak in a bath, pool, or hot tub, not until the incision is completely healed, usually 3 to 4 weeks.
